TRAINING DAY & ABRIDGED INTRODUCTION TO ORIENTEERING (MODERATE COURSES) PARA WIRRA CONSERVATION PARK 16 SEPTEMBER 2018
OVERVIEW
On Sunday 16 September 2018 Orienteering SA will conduct a training day and an abridged Introduction to Orienteering (Moderate courses) for both new and experienced orienteers in the Para Wirra Conservation Park.

Aims
The Aims of the day are:
1. To raise the standard of orienteering within Orienteering SA.
2. To introduce newcomers to our sport.
3. To conduct an abridged Introduction to Orienteering (Moderate courses) training session.
4. To enjoy our sport.
CONDUCT
Activities
The following activities will be offered:
Activities Description Comments
Information on Orienteering in Precautions against and First Aid for Snake Bite. Display board.
Very Easy course. 1.6 km; mainly along tracks.
Easy course. 2.1 km; mainly along tracks but with the option of cutting corners.
Practice Moderate course 2.0 km with many aiming-off and attack point chances to practice.
Moderate course. 3.2 km with many aiming-off and attack point chances to practice.
Medium length Hard course. 4.0 m with plenty of chances to maintain contact with the Map and the Ground.
Contour Only course. 2.5 km with lovely gully/spur terrain. Contour & magnetic north lines plus fences shown on map.

Orienteers may do numerous courses for the same fee of $10.00 each providing they report to the Finish by the closing time regardless of their completing their courses.

Introduction to Orienteering Moderate Courses Training
Prerequisites
Those attending the training must be at least 9 years old on 31 Dec 2018 and must have successfully completed three Easy orienteering courses.

Topics will include:
A very short Easy course to assess entry standards followed by:
• Using the Magnetic Compass for Direction.
• Measuring Distance on the Map and Ground.
• The Shape of Ground and Contour Lines.
• A Moderate Orienteering course Skills and Techniques.
• A Practice Moderate course.

Times
Starts will be from 9.30 am until 12 noon and Course Closure Time for all courses is 1.30 pm.

Coaches
Experienced coaches will be available to assist both new comers and experienced orienteers before and after each course.

Map
The Para Wirra Southwest 1:10,000 map will be used

Directions, Car Parking and Toilets
Signs will from the Main Gate (western) of the Para Wirra Conservation Park.

If travelling from Adelaide turn off Main North Road after the Old Spot Hotel and travel towards One Tree Hill; pass through the village downhill to the T junction where there is a brown and white sign for the Para Wirra Conservation Park; travel north and continue to do so through the roundabout (the left fork goes to Gawler and the right fork to Kersbrook).

Car parking will be in or immediately outside the Hideaway Picnic Area opposite the workshops).

Toilets are about 200m north of the car park opposite the Park Office.


Fees
A fee of $10.00 per head regardless of age and gender will be charged for the training. It includes the Park Entry Fee and do not attempt to pay the park Entry Fee online when entering the Park.
