Event information: Orienteering for Beginners Course, Hobart - Workshop #1

Are you new to orienteering or know somebody who might be interested? This course is ideal. You'll find out more about orienteering - the sport which keeps you fit while exploring local parks and bush land.

Brought to you by Hobart's Australopers Club you'll acquire skills and gain confidence to attend events.

Two Wednesday Evening Workshops 17 & 24 October from 7:30 - 10 pm

Plus one Saturday/Sunday Practical Session (date to be agreed)

Open to all ages and fitness levels (go at your own pace)

Sign up as an individual or with a friend (children must be accompanied by an adult)

Evening 1: 17 October – about 2 hours.
The basics of Orienteering,
Orienteering Maps,
Orienteering equipment,
Orienteering events at a local, state, national and international level
Basic navigational skills

Practical Session: (at a day and time suitable to everyone – possibly Saturday afternoon but up to participants)
Map reading
Distance measurement

Evening 2: 24 October – about 2 hours
Types of orienteering courses
Review of a range of past maps and courses
More advanced navigation techniques

The program is aimed at complete beginners and those who may have just started and been to a few local events but want to find out a bit more. It is free though if you wish to participate at future events we would encourage you to purchase your own timing chip at $15 – this will have a unique number (worldwide) and allow you to compete anywhere in the world!
